Reasons Why You Might Not Be Making Money With Google AdSense

Making money with Google AdSense is easy. All you need is a website that gets a decent amount of targeted traffic (more on that later). Where your traffic comes from doesn't really matter, but I've found in my experiences that search engine traffic (i.e. visitors from Google, Yahoo and Bing) click ads a lot more than visitors from Web 2.0 properties and social networking (such as Digg and Facebook).
If the traffic that your site is getting isn't targeted, you're not going to be making much money. Targeted traffic is essentially people who are looking for what your site is offering/selling. For example, if your site is about gym equipment, and all of your traffic is coming to your site looking for table lamps, you're not going to get many clicks on your AdSense ads.
In addition to this, it's important that you make sure that your site is set up properly. Your AdSense placement should be above the fold and one of the first things that people see when they visit your page. It should also stand out from the rest of the page.
Another reason why you might not be making money with AdSense is because your site isn't in a profitable niche. If your site is about astronomy, you'll struggle to find people who will bid on related keywords (meaning your earnings per click will be extremely low). If, however, your site is about auto insurance, you'll find that your earnings per click is extremely high, since the niche is so profitable.
